About WiseTwo
Bhupendra Jethwa widely recognized as WiseTwo, is a Kenyan Multi-Disciplinary Artist whose
journey into the world of street art and graffiti commenced in the streets of Nairobi, particularly
in the high-density areas of Kibera and Jericho. The moniker WiseTwo a self-bestowed title,
derives from the word “wisdom” while maintaining humility, symbolized by the appended “two”
signifying the acknowledgment that “not everyone can be the Wise One.”
With a foundation in international studies and over 13 years of immersive experience through
participation and observation, WiseTwo embarked on a nomadic artistic journey around the
world in 2012, leaving his creative imprint in over 18 countries. Presently situated in Nairobi,
Kenya, WiseTwo’s inquisitive nature and thirst for exploration have facilitated a seamless bridge
between diverse art worlds, from traditional to contemporary influences. His extensive body of
work encompasses watercolours, paintings, and large-scale murals, all interwoven by a universal
thread that transcends the myriad masks he paints, fostering a connection that unites humanity.
Within this artistic venture unfolds a personal odyssey-a delicate balance between ancient and
modern realms, harmonised through intricate colour palettes and masks that encapsulate entire
universes. Each artwork evokes a psychedelic trance, prompting profound contemplation on life,
existence, culture, race, wisdom, knowledge, representation, identity, and inclusion.
WiseTwo’s narratives and perspectives revolve around the theme of balance-a world shaped by
impulses and meditations, joy and pain, language and symbols, art and science, life and death.
His massive murals grace walls across the globe, some residing in private collections, while
others find homes in intimate, site-specific locations.
The artist’s portfolio extends to various private and public collections, including notable spaces
such as Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, USA, Converse Head Offices in Mexico City,
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Michael Goldstein Law Offices in Los Angeles,
United Nations offices in Zurich and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) in
Nairobi.
Artist Statement
WiseTwo’s artistic statement delves into critical examination of social and cultural issues, often
drawing inspiration from ancient civilizations and the unseen connections between people and
cultures. Through meticulous color palettes, symmetrical shapes, and forms that manifest as a
universe of masks, WiseTwo delves into a rich tapestry of subjects, weaving a narrative that
encompasses ancient languages, enigmatic scripts, shamanic mask rituals, and the plight of
endangered tribes. Utilizing a blend of acrylic, ink, and spray paint, his consistent methodology
weaves a conceptual tapestry in each mural and painting. As he navigates through research and
production, new realms of interest emerge, seamlessly guiding him to the creation of his next
body of work.
